Thinking Beyond the Pot!

Hi my friends, it’s that time of year that many of us are anticipating planting pots to beautify our decks, porches, and gardens.

Everyone knows that a planted pot is pretty.  I always plant a few to go under my pergola.

But if you really want to do something that’s a show stopper, think beyond the pot.

I am always on the look out for unusual things to plant and place throughout my garden.

I know this old stove is not something everyone would have. . .believe me the beast is heavy and it took three guys to bring it up from my previous home.  But there are lots of other fun things you can plant.

Recently I just planted an old suitcase.  First I lined it with plastic and then burlap.

I threw in an old piece of gingerbread trim and some vintage seed packs along the back.  Hubby cut the wood path from a branch.

I haven’t found my fairies and gnomes from last year so I stuck in this large fairy that I just bought.  Talk about Jack and the giant slayer.

Here are a lot more fun things to plant.  Galvanized is great for planting sedums because they can handle the heat.  Plus they come back each year.

           (vintage fertilizer or seed spreader)

                            (chicken feeders)

                                            (old bath tub)

                            (Mop bucket)

                                          (enamel coffee pot)

                                                     (watering cans)

                                        (restaurant cooking containers)

                                 (teapots)

                                                 (old wheelbarrows)

                  (fishing tackle box, tool chest tray, & little rusted truck)

These pictures were just taken.  I just leave them outside and let them winter over.  Notice that some of the sedums are just coming back.

Thinking outside of the pot is always fun!  Remember, you do need some type of drainage.  I usually drill holes into the containers.  If it’s something that you don’t want to drill a hole into then put something in the bottom.  Styrofoam peanuts work well, small gravel, or what I use is smashed pop cans.  Heavens knows we have plenty of those!
