Thinking Beyond the Pot!

Hi my friends, it’s that time of year that many of us are anticipating planting pots to beautify our decks, porches, and gardens.

Everyone knows that a planted pot is pretty.  I always plant a few to go under my pergola.

But if you really want to do something that’s a show stopper, think beyond the pot.

I am always on the look out for unusual things to plant and place throughout my garden.

I know this old stove is not something everyone would have. . .believe me the beast is heavy and it took three guys to bring it up from my previous home.  But there are lots of other fun things you can plant.

Recently I just planted an old suitcase.  First I lined it with plastic and then burlap.

I threw in an old piece of gingerbread trim and some vintage seed packs along the back.  Hubby cut the wood path from a branch.

I haven’t found my fairies and gnomes from last year so I stuck in this large fairy that I just bought.  Talk about Jack and the giant slayer.

Here are a lot more fun things to plant.  Galvanized is great for planting sedums because they can handle the heat.  Plus they come back each year.

                                          (enamel coffee pot)

                                                     (watering cans)

                                        (restaurant cooking containers)

                                 (teapots)

                                                 (old wheelbarrows)

(fishing tackle box, tool chest tray, & little rusted truck)

These pictures were just taken.  I just leave them outside and let them winter over.  Notice that some of the sedums are just coming back.

Thinking outside of the pot is always fun!  Remember, you do need some type of drainage.  I usually drill holes into the containers.  If it’s something that you don’t want to drill a hole into then put something in the bottom.  Styrofoam peanuts work well, small gravel, or what I use is smashed pop cans.  Heavens knows we have plenty of those!

Happy planting!

Jann

Great ideas! Planting in something other than a pot gives the garden or porch so much more personality. Love it!

These are awesome and fun ideas Jann. I love the old stove! I used old enamel pans and kettles and tubs for planter in our yard. They often have holes in the bottom already so no need to drill. I put coffee filters in the bottom over the holes before I add the soil so it won't run out the hole. Thanks for sharing your fun containers! Pam

The container you have your hens and chickens in or sedums...Did you put holes in the bottom of that one? I have a smaller one similar and have been wondering how I can use it. Nancy http://cozythymecottage.blogspot.com/

I love every bit of it! My sister and BIL found and painted a set of washtubs on it's tall stand for me since I can't get up/down anymore. I was able to plant my tomatoes and some other things up high. I'll be looking for more "up high" things do use. You've really given me some ideas-thanks.

Oh what a wonderful assortment of fun garden containers! I so enjoyed this post as we have so much snow yet and I want to get outside and start sprucing the yard up. I do have a top shelf to a wood stove like yours. I think I'll put it on my garden shed wall and decorate it. Thanks for the tip!
