Easter Mantles

Easter day is drawing near so I thought I would share with you my Easter mantles.  The first one is really a shelf, but gives the same effect.

My mantles are one of the first things I decorate for the holidays.  It’s always fun and I just love looking up and seeing something cheerful.

In the living room I have a shelf made from half of an old door and three vintage corbels.  Hubby built it for me and I love it!  Notice the reflection of my entry in the mirror.  Yes, the sky is still falling. lol!

Bunnies and chicks are scattered throughout.  My velvet bunny sits on a mercury glass plate stand while a paper mache egg and furry chick rest below.  A chick riding bunny and a silver egg hide inside a cloche.  The little duck candy box is so old.  I think it’s ever so sweet.  Another little chick sits upon a book.  I love using old books for elevation in my vignettes. And a faux chocolate rabbit and paper goodie basket complete the scene.

I found this spooner at a thrift store.  The inside was lined with copper.  A little bottle with an Easter scene sits atop a piece of old china.

This fun hatbox covered with coffee filters was made by my hair dresser and friend, Shalana.  Here’s a better picture of the corbels.  I love them!  Originally I bought them to put on my kitchen island.  Hubby wasn’t keen about that idea so he gladly used them on this shelf.

The family room mantle. . . You know me, no vignette would be complete without a bit of vintage.  My turquoise window was found when I went on a picking adventure with friends.  We got to pick an old barn.

A bunny box, (again, an old book for elevation), a plate I won at bunko, and a thrifted mini wheelbarrow holding a carrot.  The wreath I bought from Décor Steals.  Oh that Décor Steals can get you in trouble. Hee-hee!  I added pale lavender and pink ribbons and a birdcage tag I made.  An old frog holds an Easter postcard.

The two finials I bought for half price at Hobby Lobby.  I loved the aqua and pale green color.  Can I just say that I thought the half price was about what normal price should have been.  Does anyone besides me think their regular prices are way high?  Chicken little is still pecking for seeds.

Kind of hard to see, but inside the stitched cage is a white wool bird.

Here’s what’s hanging out on the hearth. I love my old bottles filled with Spring flowers.   I got the large bunny for $5 because one foot was broke off.  I knew with a little hot glue she’d be good as new.

Hard to believe that soon I will have another mantle to decorate.  My basement fireplace is finished and I am loving it.  I finally have a white mantle! They are painting the walls today.  Can’t wait to start sharing the fun!

Sensational Spoolie Swap!

It all started one day when I was responding to a comment left on one of my blog posts.  Afterwards I hopped over for a visit.

It  was a blog that I have visited before and love it.  Suddenly my eyes spied this on her side bar.

After clicking on the link (521 Lake Street) I was hooked.

I had never heard of a spoolie, but oh how cute!  I was so busy at the time that I almost resisted.  But, no it was not to be.  I had to join in!

Making spoolies is addicting and I had so much fun!  My swap partner was Laurie from Laurie Stamps.  She is so talented and wait till you see what she sent me.  But first I will show you what I made for her.

I started with a couple of small spoolies.  One wrapped with bakers twine and the other with vintage lace.  I added a few little vintage items from my stash and bits and pieces of moss, berries, pearls, and flowers.

Then I thought it would be fun to make a jumbo spoolie.  I had bought this large spool of turquoise twine at Christmas.  I added a furry vintage chick and some lavender & yellow blossoms.  An old piece of handmade lace and a music banner.

It’s easier to tell how big it is in this pic.  Now that’s one big spoolie. lol!

This picture shows them tucked in her egg box.

Now Laurie is such a fantastic artist.  Look at what she sent me.  Is this fabulous or what?  Love the scene and how she put it in a little box!  Sweet, sweet, sweet!

And my gift box, oh my!  Love, love that glitter!!!

She also sent me some fun little treasures and a darling card.  I have to tell you how much I adore the little chicks.  When we were young we always got at least one fuzzy chick like this in our Easter basket.  How did she know? Hee-hee.

The Vintage Farmhouse for Creative Things Thursday

A Double D Day!

A couple days ago I walked outside and immediately started having a ‘double D’ day.

No my friends, I didn’t suddenly become extra voluptuous!   Double D words started popping into my head and right out of my mouth.

The first double D was-Darn Deer!

That’s right, the darn deer had come right up to my porch and nibbled off all the blooms on my newly planted pansies.  They didn’t seem to like the Primroses quite as much.

Not only did they nibble, but they pulled the entire plant out and left it laying on the ground.  Then came the second double D word.  The ‘dirty devils’ had made a mess of the soil on the porch.  I stuck the plants back in and they are starting to recover.

Lucky for me they didn’t bother the pots on my old green ironing board.  It was a $5 find. The mama and baby bunnies were my mothers.

I had a bag of tulip and hyacinth bulbs in the garage that I didn’t get in the ground last Fall.  I’ve stuck some in a couple pots.  Anxious to see if they do much.  They have grown quite a bit.

They also missed these pots in my cabinet.  I love planting grass seed both indoors and out for a quick touch of Spring.

My dad’s old lunch pail is filled with plastic eggs.  A crochet chicken sits on top.  Wonder if any will hatch?

Some old finials, a gazing ball and a bird join my painted wooden eggs.  I decorated the porch with just a touch of Easter.  It will be easy to change it out to Spring afterwards.

Originally I planned on hanging eggs from the branches.  Hasn’t happened yet.

I placed a wire container filled with seed balls, a bundle of lavender, and a watering can on my vintage podium.

This sweet little can holds water so it’s perfect for giving the plants a drink.

This 100+ year old door is off of my youngest daughter, Kylee’s home.  When they left for Spain they replaced it with a more air tight one for the renters.  We are storing it for them.  Why not show it off for a while?

I made the pillows for my two turquoise chairs last year out of burlap and an old curtain.

The Spring umbrella was a Pinterest copy cat last year also.

Spring flowers, eggs, and moss are tucked in amongst the pleats.

We are suppose to get rain this week.  I hope so because hubby just mowed the lawn and fertilized.

Irish Eyes are Smilin!

Top of the morning to you my friends!  Today is St. Patty’s Day and we’ll all be ‘wearin the green’.  Although there’s no Irish in our blood we can’t help but celebrate.

Thoughts of Ireland, Leprechauns, gold coins, and luck are just a few of the things that make it such a fun holiday.

Not to mention the pinching thing of those not wearin the green.

The kids will be coming and we’ll all be eating a ‘wee bit of green’.

Our meal will be late in the day so I thought I’d share some of last years feast.

One of our favorite side dishes is Green Rice.  It’s easy, cheezy and oh so yummy.  I’ll share the recipe at the end of this post.

What would St. Patty’s Day be without a bit of fried cabbage?  We like to mix it up a little each year.  This year my daughter, Karrah is going to make the  Colcannon recipe that was shared on SYC #48.

Last year she made these cute little pots of gold.

Corned Beef is a tasty meat that we only have once a year.  Strawberry Spinach salad is another family fav.

Some green rolls and grass planted in a green & white glass bake casserole.

Wishing you all the ‘luck’ of the Irish throughout the year!

Green Rice:

4 c. cooked rice                 3/4 c. chopped onion

8 oz. jar Cheez Whiz          3/4 c. chopped celery

1 stick butter (or marg.)      2 pkgs. frozen broccoli cuts

2 cans cr. of mushroom soup (any cream soup is fine)

Cook rice and add Cheez Whiz.  Saute onions and celery in butter.  Cook broccoli and drain.  Combine all ingredients.  Stir well.  Bake in greased casserole at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
