Thrifted Treasures

Hello my friends, I have had a bit of luck at the thrift shops lately and I thought I’d share them with you.

Saturday I woke up with an infected eye so on Monday I called the dr. and he had me come in.  It meant a half an hour trip to Provo, but stopping in at a nearby thrift shop helped me forget about my pain. lol!

 

 

Imagine my delight when I spied these beauties right off the bat!  They were in the collectors case so a little more pricey, but still to sweet to pass up.  The large plates and cow creamer were $10 ea. and the saucer was $5.
 

 

I love toile and this is two side panels and one very long valance.  I think I can do a bit of tweaking and use them in my basement family room.  If not, the fabric is great and can be used for so many things.  All of them cost me $10.  I just washed them and haven’t ironed them yet.

 

 

I found 8 of these pink goblets for $.50 cents each.

 

 

This sweet little Beatrix Potter child’s plates was only $1.

 

 

Today I went to a friends house to plan for an upcoming party.  Why not stop by our local thrift?

 

 

It made me smile when I spied this cookbook for $2.  I had this one when I was first married.  Silly me got rid of it when it became worn an bought a new one.

The shutter I found a while ago for $5, but just painted it.  I need to buy new sandpaper to distress it more.

 

 

What do you think of this jar, leave as is or repaint it?  I know what I am going to do, but just wondering. He-he!  It cost me all of $.50 cents.

A pretty red and white box for $2.  I have plans for this in my Valentine décor.

 

 

I thought this little fairy was sweet and would be fun for Spring.  Marked $5, but he offered to lower it to $3 because it had been there a week.  I didn’t even ask.

The pretty eggs are perfect to add to a bird vignette.

 

 

I never pass up a vintage ball or a piece of hardware.

 

 

I bought these for $1 each with my kids in mind.  I knew they would love them.  My son, Dalan and dil were here tonight so they took them home.

Make a Towel Bar from Vintage Hardware

Remodeling a bathroom is a big and expensive undertaking. The results, however, are always worth the effort. Who wouldn't love a new sink, toilet, tub and shower? But if complete remodeling isn't in your cards at the moment, there are several ways to update the room that gets used the most. It's as easy as replacing hardware. You can get new knobs for the vanity or cabinetry or simply replace the towel bar.

As an interior designer I'm always looking for new ways to add style to any room I'm redecorating. Sometimes all it takes is thinking outside the box. When I found an old brass door pull at a flea market, I instantly knew it would be perfect as a towel bar. I assume this one came from an apartment or commercial door. Maybe the lock was in the center opening? It's the perfect size for a hand towel when installed horizontally.

I love the shape and little bit of detail in the design. Don't polish away the old patina—that's part of the charm of antique pieces. The brass gets shiny with use. This bathroom has painted wainscot, so the door pull complements the vintage styling in the room.

Design shouldn't be too serious. Have fun with accessories. I printed an appropriate reminder for the little ones in the family: "Wash Your Hands"!

If your bathroom is a guest powder room, you might want to decorate in a more sophisticated style. Try black and white zebra print towels. I love the contrast of old wainscot and vintage door pull paired with a modern animal print.

Try adding a little bling. The powder room is an easy space to do something unexpected. Go glam and wow your guests. I added a vintage rhinestone and pearl pin to the opening using candle adhesive. It's a waxy substance you use to hold candles in place. It's removable so you can change your "jewels" every season. No holes necessary!

Embellishing my Hearts and a Dressed up Soda Bottle

Hello my friends.  How are you handling these cold winter days?

I don't have much of a problem with the winter blues, but I have found that keeping busy helps me stay positive.

I have been cleaning and organizing.  So far I have tackled my pantry and walk in closet.  The laundry room is next on the list.

But all work and no play makes for a dreary day! 

 I don't know about you, but I need to take time now and then to 'create' something.  Does wonders for the soul and lifts my spirits!

Last week I pulled out some of my favorite fabrics and vintage linens and sewed them into a handful of hearts.

Not my good linens, mind you; but those that are worn or badly stained.

I actually had used half of this to make a cover for my sewing machine.  Part of it was hidden underneath and I accidently cut off the bottom of the bonnet girls skirt.

I was sad and almost trashed it.  Something told me to hang on to her and I'm so glad I did!

Yesterday I sat down and embellished them with trinkets that I have picked up here and there.

It's those little things that give them personality.

The linen ones are so sweet that they need very little, if any.  But the simplistic grain sack and floral hearts can handle getting dressed up.

The little scissors seem to say, "Let's CUT to the chase and fall in love!

I picked the hearts up off of my ottoman and sat them on the tray of my chippy high chair to move them out of the way.

-oh baby-!

I have a few more cut out so my collection will continue to grow.

Friday was a kind of tinkering day for me so I added some embellishments' to a soda bottle.

I'm a little late, but some blog friends issued a craft challenge of repurposing a soda bottle or milk jug.
2 Crochet Hooks Craft Challenge

My youngest daughter, Kylee gave me a basket full of 'cherry goodness' for my birthday in July.   This cherry soda was in it. She knows how much I love anything with cherries on it.

I thought that the bottle was too cute to trash.  I envisioned it as being absolutely darling by the time I got through with it.  lol!

Didn't quite turn out like I imagined, but might be sweet in a Valentines vignette.

I found a cork that fit and dusted it with glitter.  A ring of rhinestones surround the top and a garland of vintage trim wraps around the bottom.  I tossed a handful of pearls inside.

The pin is one that I gave Kylee as a child.  Sweet little flowers, a crochet heart, and a bit of hugs and kisses.

I liked how this photo was blurry but you can see the yummy cherries!

A heart ticket, a small key, and another piece of the vintage trim hang from the side.

Well there you have my bits of  'fun'!

A Hearty Winter Meal. . .Steak Chili

Hello my friends, happy Friday!

Who doesn't like a bowl of chili on a cold Winters Day?  Every now and then it's fun to mix things up a little or give a traditional meal a twist.

So why not make a steak chili?  I first had this at a friends home a few years ago while playing bunco.

 

It's easy to make, delicious and I love the fact that it cooks in a crockpot.

Makes the house smell yummy and it's all ready to eat at the end of the day.

 

This is what it looks like after cooking 5 hours.

 

 

I served it topped with cheese, sour cream, and S&P,

 

 

with cornbread and honey butter on the side.

 

 

The cast iron molds were thrift finds.  They put a little fun into the cornbread.

 

 

I missed getting a photo of the snowman and woman.  A few came out great, but I found I needed to spray it a little better.  A couple lots their tiny arms.  OUCH!

 

Crockpot Steak Chili

(serves 4 to 6)

1 lb beef steak cubed (I used Sirloin)

1 small onion

2  jalapenos chopped (opt.)

1 tsp. salt

1 1/2 tsp. chili powder

1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

1 can diced tomatoes. (I used two because I had extra steak.  One had added green chili's so I left out the jalapenos.)

1 can tomato sauce

2 cans kidney beans ( I used one black and one kidney because that's what I had)

1 or 2 bay leaves

 

Cook beef in a small skillet until browned.  Add to crockpot.  Cook onion and jalapenos in skillet until softened.  Add to crockpot.

Add all remaining ingredients.  (I rinsed beans).  Stir.  Cover and cook on high for 2 or 3 hours then on low for as long as desired.  Stir occasionally.  Remove bay leaves before serving.

Winter TIME Afternoon Tea. . .

There's nothing more relaxing than sitting by a warm cozy fire and sipping a cup of tea in the afternoon.

After running errands all morning I did just exactly that.

 

First I had to set a table for this Winter Time tea!

 

 

 

Yesterday while at the grocery store I walked past a cart in the floral dept.  These white roses were in there to be thrown away.  I asked if I could buy them.

She reduced them to $5 instead of $15.  I want to dry them and use them for Valentines.

 

They are a little old, but I love the look!

 

A little birdie told me that blue and white were the perfect colors for Winter.

 

 

So I knew that meant that I was to use my sweet bird teapot and creamer.  A gift from my friend, Peggy.

I pulled out what few blue and white dishes I have.  Thrift finds from a couple years ago that I couldn't pass up.

They are a mismatched set of four plates, four saucers, and two cups.  The little bowl I already had.

I set this up in my basement family room because I knew my blue checked rug would go perfect with this blue and white theme.

 

The tablecloth is a vintage 'popcorn' bedspread that I bought at a yard sale last summer for $20.

It reminded me of snowballs.

 

Yesterday I cleaned my pantry and found two scone mixes from Lehi Roller Mills that I knew were quite old.  I was about to throw them out and then I decided I would mix one up this morning and see.

 

 

Orange Cranberry. . .how perfect is that?  Oranges are a wonderful Winter fruit!

Well my friends, they were quite tasty.  I think the bits of fruit are probably a little more chewy than they would have been when they were new, but they still were yummy.

I frosted them with a bit of cream cheese frosting and topped them with some orange zest.

 

 

I also found the perfect tea, herbal orange.

It's amazing what one might find when they clean their pantry.  lol!

 

I loved what it said on the tea bag!

 

 

Something we could all use now and then. . .A hint of zest.  A moment of peace!

 

 

 

Well my friends, I've enjoyed spending time with you.  Gotta go sip that tea and have another scone.  (Yes, I've already eaten one.)

 :)
