Dining on Vintage Red

Welcome to my kitchen!

Today we will be dining on vintage red and wild game. . .

We are studying the letter E over at teacher Jenny’s.  I will be joining her with the word EAT.

Have you ever found a piece that you just knew you had to do a tablescape with?  That’s what happened to me.  Yesterday I  found this treasure at D.I. for $7.

A darling teapot that looks to me to be some kind of transferware.  Not sure, and  not sure if it’s vintage.  Anyone know?  Either way, I love it!

All I could think about last night is how cute it would be with my red dishes.

Did you notice, no large red plates?  This collection is evolving and I have not found any yet.  Not to fuss, my wild game plates work well.

It just so happens that I have a fun green Cornish hen that helps complete the theme.

Have you ever eaten wild game hens before?  My hubby use to hunt and once he brought home grouse, chuckers, and pheasant.  I cooked them up but didn’t love it.  Growing up my mom use to buy each of us a Cornish hen, stuff it with her homemade stuffing and we’d  dine like queens.  I’ve only cooked them twice since we’ve been married.  Kind of a fun idea for a special occasion.

my goblets are a mix of whatever I happen to run across.  I only had four wooden red chargers, so the end plates are sitting atop a larger red plate.

One thing about red dishes, some of them are true red and some are painted.  I found that out with these large red plates.  The first time I went to wash them I submerged them in water and some of the paint came off.  Now I just wipe clean.

Vintage red is quite pricey.  The start of my collection began in Virginia.  While vacationing there 4 yrs. ago we stopped at a small market.  Inside they had  a lot of  redware lining a long shelf.  I instantly fell in love.  Picked up the pitcher and saw that it was $100.

I put it back on the shelf and hubby and I left.  Ten miles down the road I couldn’t get the dishes off my mind.  Wished I would’ve at least bought one piece.  Hubby actually turned around and drove back.  While trying to decide what to buy, the owner could see how much I loved everything.  She said, “They’ve been here for a while how about all of it for $100.”  You didn’t have to ask me twice.  We did lose one bowl that got broken.  After we got home I added up all the price tags and found that it was over $350.  I have a lot more cups and glasses that I didn’t use on the table today.

I ‘ve added a few pieces.  My cousin gave me more cups, saucers, and small bowls.  They once were her mothers.  Whenever I see a piece at thrift stores I pick it up.  I know that some of it is not vintage, but if it’s real red It’s going home with me.
