Dying for Turquoise!

Those of you who know me know that the last few years I have been in love with the color turquoise, or as some call it; robin egg blue.

As a result my kitchen and family room are now decorated in red, turquoise, and green.

First I painted the half wall under my stairs and leading into my kitchen Silver Sage Blue.

Then I painted my island and fan hood.  In the pics they look like different colors, but they really are the same. They have been distressed and glazed.

I bring in a bit more of the color by painting some of my architectural finds.

I get very excited when I find vintage décor sporting that color.

I even buy drapery fabric that has that color in the design.

But now, have I gone too far?  I am dying for turquoise!

Literally, I mean dying!  It all started when I took a class at Thanksgiving Point last January.  One employee mentioned that she had dyed some coffee filters with Rit dye to make a pink Valentines wreath.  I have already made coffee filter wreaths, but

Immediately the color turquoise popped into my head.  I must do it!

Easy enough, I just filled a four Qt. roaster pan full of hot water, added the dye and brought it to a boil.  Then dipped the entire stack of coffee filters (100) into the dye.  Do not separate, just dip  (I used tongs) then place them on a paper towel on a cookie sheet.  From there I threw them in the dryer.  I did not separate them.  By keeping them stacked you get variety in color.

I had a hard time finding turquoise dye.  Hobby Lobby had it and it was called Teal.  I bought the powdered, but my SIL dyed some yellow and bought the liquid.  Hers did not have quite as much variety in color, but very pretty. Later I bought more teal dye for my sister and friend to make one.  This time I bought the liquid.  We put less dye in and got a softer shade.

After dry I just crinkled each filter into a rosette and hot glued it to a 16” styrofoam wreath. I used 200 filters.  A low temp gun works best.

Then came the fun part, embellishing the wreath.  I knew that pink would look cute, but I wanted to use it more often than just Spring.  I went with green accents.

This die cut bird cage that my SIL gave me has a story all it’s own.  The crystals hanging down, which by the way, I think makes it were $5.99 for two at Hobby Lobby.  Needless to say I made three trips to use a 40 percent off coupon.  Am I cheap or what? lol!  Plus, here’s the kicker.  They are in a locked case and when you buy one they escort it to the check out for you.  I thought I was buying pure gold! Oh, but you should see them glisten!

This nest and sweet bird are just sitting inside the wreath.  I bought the burlap bird at a cute shop, Brambles for $7.99  It would be very easy to make one. Sometimes I feel I need to not be such a do-it-yourselfer and help support a starving artist! lol!

There you have it, my dyed turquoise coffee filter wreath.  I think I will place it on my mantel after Easter.  Oh what some girls won’t do for the color turquoise!
