Sunday morning I woke up feeling achy all over. I thought that I might be coming down with something so I stayed home from church and just laid around all day.
Hung out in loungers and a tee. Well, one can only veg for so long. . .come afternoon I found myself wanting to do something.
I bought a leather bound sketch book at Hobby Lobby last Fall. My thoughts were that I would create a ‘garden journal’ to help pass the time during the Winter.
Needless to say, I hadn’t even picked it up and done anything.
I have always wanted to try my hand at watercolor. Although I use to teach Tole painting years ago, I’ve never really water colored.
Not really knowing what I was doing, I pulled out some old acrylic paints and went for it. I wanted to see if I could do it without sketching anything on paper first. I did cheat and look at some water colors on line.
This is my attempt at Snapdragons. Not nearly as good as the sample I was looking at, but hey, I’m kind of liking it. It’s like I use to tell my Tole painting students. The ones who would moan a little and say how, “ theirs was not nearly as good as mine”. “Just wait till you get it home, you will love it!” Guess what? They always did.
Well, I couldn’t stop there. After all, I was just warming up.
After I painted the Pansy I wrote a list of my favorite Spring plants for pots.
It’s only a matter of a couple weeks until I will be filling them with these beauties.
I tore the Pansy from the page and attached it to a corrugated tag tied with a bit of lace. The French pots are just holding the page open, but they’re the perfect Spring touch!
Notice the little crochet Pansy? I found it among my stash of flowers. One I had picked up on clearance at Hobby Lobby. Yes, always check their clearance isle.
One last little project and that will do for today. I had pinned this idea of painting on a book page. I decided to use an old song book I had.
The perfect song title for a ‘pretty bird’. Not so sure how pretty my bird is, but at least you can tell it’s a bird. lol! Again, I just went for it and didn’t sketch a thing.
His proportions aren’t quite right, but he’s a fairy tale bird.
Plump little fella, isn’t he?
Of course, adding some line work helped to give him a little more shape.
Loving my new sketch book!
Well, I’m no artist, but I sure did have fun! I think I would really enjoy taking a watercolor class.
Maybe I’m like Will Smith, and I think that I need to bring it in the 3rd quarter.
If you watched the New Jimmy Fallon show last night you know what I’m talking about. If not, I’ll explain a little. Will just went skydiving. He said that now days it’s very possible that we will live to be 90 years old. He just turned ‘45’ and thought that like football he needed to bring it in the 3rd quarter.
If you ask me, it was just half time entertainment. lol! My age is more in the 3rd quarter.
You certainly won’t catch me skydiving, but things might be getting a little ‘sketchy’ around here. Hee-hee!
Yeah, thinking of trying my hand a sketching something next.
Have you tried anything new lately?
Your 3rd quarter will be here before you know it!
hugs,
Jann

Your paintings are wonderful. What a great way to make use of a sick day.

Oh, Jann, you make me want to get out my watercolors. Your snapdragons are beautiful.
KEEP IT UP!
Very inspiring post! Made me want to get some water colors out and try to paint something. Loved that pretty little bird looking so Spring-ish. I am looking forward to seeing more of your water colors.

Wow Jann you have some real talent there. Those watercolors are beautiful. Great job.

Oh my goodness, that is so beautiful! I wonder if I could catch on to watercolor. I love the look. I used to do rosemaling, but it took so long to clean out the brushes. Wow, that really sounds lazy, doesn't it! Anyway, your sketch book is an inspiration!
Love the flowers and bird that you painted with water colors. So sweet!!
hugs,
Cindy
Looks professional to me!!
Hello Jann,I have been playing with my jewelry and trying to design a necklace, that I really have been working on for awhile. I have enjoyed seeing your flowers. I always try to keep myself inspired as it keeps me feeling young! As I will not be sky diving ....
Have a great week.
Blessings, Roxy
Jann this is so pretty! I love watercolors and this turned out fabulous. I do love trying new things! Hugs, Linda
I'm past the 3rd quarter working on the 4th LOL. I have so many projects I just need a kick to get me going. I have curtains to make, tings to paint and list goes on and on and on.
Love your watercolors you did a wonderful job on them - you go girl.

Jann- That is great! Love it. I have always wanted to try watercolors, too, but have not done so yet. I used to do quite a bit of folk art painting and some oils when I was really young. You may have a whole new career ahead of you!!! xo Diana
Love these, Jann! I've recently tried my hand at painting with acryllics. I'm enjoying it alot, though mine aren't as good as yours!! :) It's fun to try something new now and then. While we had snow last week, I painted a picture of my house. I'll share it soon. Keep on enjoying your watercolors! You're great!
Very pretty Jann ! Love the bird !
I love what you did with your water colors!
Jann, don't underestimate yourself friend...you done a wonderful job! I am impressed but then you are talking to someone that cannot draw a straight line much less dabble in water color! I love it and yes, the birdy is adorable. Hugs and blessings, Cindy
wow, your first time was wonderful. It looks like you could Teach a watercolor class. I love your colors. Great job.
Angel
I can hardly believe it was your first time.
These are all ADORABLE, and beautiful colors :)
You are a very gifted lady!
You did quite well and I especially love the bird! You are so talented.
I have thought of trying watercolor one day...after house repairs and remodel are done!!
Jann, this goes way beyond "trying your hand". All of your efforts are so lovely. I am not surprised that you taught tole painting. Given your myriad of talents, I'm sure there is not much you won't be very good at.
Blessings, Dana
Fabulously fantastic, Jann!
Hugs ~Pernilla
OMGosh, Jann! You are an artist! I LOVE the snapdragons:)
Oh JANN how very PRETTY and creative and just wonderful...you must be an artist of some sort because this is just lovely!
i love the look of your paintings, jann:) love the bird with the music peeking through!
Yes, you are an artist! Adorable!
Jan, your watercolors are lovely. I've tried, but I'm not very successful. I downloaded the Waterlogue app last night, and now I can "cheat" watercolor. '-)
I shared my link at today's party.
Very pretty, Jann, and I love the little birdie on the page of music!
Blessings,
Sandi
this is so beautiful Jann! I've always loved the idea of creating a nature journal. Have you ever seen Country Diary of An Edwardian Lady? It is a 1908 (I think) nature journal with water colors and nature observations. it's by Edith Holden. Your watercolors are so pretty, love the bird with the music.
I am your newest follower.
If these are your first attempts at watercolor, then I can't wait to see what you do after you learn more. These are just beautiful! I love the snapdragons and that chunky little bird is adorable. Thank you for sharing at What We Accomplished Wednesdays. Have a lovely week! ~Deborah
Beautiful work - I'm glad you had a chance to do it........thank you for sharing. :) Gentle Joy
Hi Jann
The snapdragon painting made me think of Asian calligraphy. They are great in my opinion!!
Have a great weekend!
Your watercolors are beautiful! It looks like you are a pro already. And I adore the bird on the sheet music (is that a robin? They just started showing up here in Boston this week! I'm hoping it's a sign of spring arriving soon despite the 18 inches of snow still on the ground). I suppose that I should come up with something new to do now that I'm well into my 3rd quarter. :)

Still catching up, Jann. :) Your snapdragon watercolor is exquisite. I love it! Are you going to frame it, or do something else with it? It's wonderful. ~ Nancy
