Pie Town Adventure. . .

Hello my friends,
have you ever driven 10 hours for a slice of pie? :)
Well, I have and really; it was more about the adventure than it was about the pie.

My sister Jeanne and I drove 2 hours to Ferron, UT where we joined our sister, Julie and friend, Dolly for our
pie seeking journey.

It all started when Julie and Dolly saw Pie Town featured on a local television station.  Yup, that's all it took for it to be added to their 'bucket list'.

A little remote town about 2 hrs. from Gallop, NM.  A hidden gem in the middle of nowhere.  Did I mention that
the population is 186?
My sister googled and found out that they were having a 'Pie Festival' Sept. 10th.  The date was set and off we went.

Like I say, the adventure alone was worth the trip.  Lots of belly laughing went on in the car and along the way we saw some wonderful sites.

Snakes on rocks,

miles and miles of pretty yellow wildflowers,

and a fabulous truck that I would liked to have hitched to the back of our wagon and drug it home with me!

Another good laugh was our attempt at a 'selfie'.  It was agreed that we all need longer arms.  lol!

I got cornered in 'four corners',

found a few treasures. . .cute owls, Pendleton throw,  some fun flour sacks, and an old wooden trowel,

and captured twin (at least we assumed) baby elk along the way.

Finally after a long stretch of slow driving through Indian reservation we arrived in "Pie Town"
Believe me, you do NOT want to speed.  The tickets are pricey.  We talked to two people who had gotten ticketed.

Where we learn that "pie fixes everything".  (wink)

There was plenty of entertainment.

Pie eating contest,

and vendors selling their homemade wares.

And I met the famous gal of 'Pioneer Pies'.  There's quite a story behind it all and I heard that there is even a documentary.
I'm going to see if I can find it.

And YES!  We did eat pie.

We shared two slices in the morning, apple chili (had to try it), and coconut meringue.

Later in the afternoon we shared two more.  Peach and Lemon chess, (basically like a lemon bar in a pie shell).

Coconut was my favorite.

Four pieces of pie shared by four gals.  Yup, we did drive 12 hours for a slice of pie.  ha, ha!

On the way home we spied a couple more beautiful sites!

And I even brought home a big fat pumpkin plucked from my sisters patch.

And a couple of mini pies as well.  I finished off my strawberry rhubarb one for breakfast.

Now, if you're thinking of going to pie town here's what I learned:

1. Buy pie early.  By 2 p.m. Pioneer Pies had almost sold out of their 160 pies.  Our only choices were the peach and lemon chess.

2.  The pie was good, but not excellent.  Not meaning to brag; but I think my pie is right up there.  I make a delicious (so people tell me) coconut cream and pecan pie.  The recipes are from my mother and mother in law.

3.  check out the other pie place in pie town.  Silly us never went inside.  What were we thinking?

4.  And remember Don't speed on the way to Pie Town!

Last Thanksgiving my kids had a pie bake off.  I'd say their pies could also give "Pioneer Pies" a run for their money.

Still, I'm happy that the town is a success because of their pies!

Although my sister texted me this morning saying that Pie Town did not make the top 10 list of must have pie destinations.

But 4 & 20 Blackbirds in Brooklyn New York made #1
for their salted caramel pie.

YUM! (I love caramel) I bet you can guess where our next
girl get away might be!

Eat dessert first!

hugs,
Jann

This is wonderful!
What a great combination of fun, your bucket list, laughter, and PIE.
I have discovered New Mexico since our daughter and our grandsons moved to El Paso.
I need to check out Gallup and nearby Pie Town!

Who doesn't love a good road trip - especially if there's pie at the end! :) I enjoyed your latest adventure.

This sounds like it was a fantabulous adventure for you and your sisters. I am so very happy you were able to do it together. Everyone in these parts brags on Cookies' pies in a whole in the wall town. We went once and were extremely disappointed. I make some pretty good pecan, chocolate, and coconut pies. Well, I should say my husband and I do. He makes the crust. I just cannot seem to make a crust without it going to pieces.

Have a wonderful week sweet lady,
Laura

This is fabulous! I love "traveling" with you -- just wish this one was in person. That photo of the truck with all the flowers -- swoon! And oh, the pie and the fun!

I have a fun story to share on Pie Lady of Pie Town. A friend of mine from Lansing, Jane Rosemont, moved to Santa Fe. Jane was known as an artist and photographer here but she took up filmmaking after her move and produced a documentary called "The Pie Lady of Pie Town," which has received a number of awards in festivals nationwide. I'm not sure if this is the program you saw, but if it is, you're connected to the filmmaker through degrees of separation!

Jann -- here are a couple of links. Doesn't look like it's available online except as DVD -- http://kubygirlproductions.com/ and http://www.pieladyofpietown.com/

Well...We have driven 10-12 hours for pie, too. In all fairness, I must say that our priority was visiting my mother. We are from Columbus, OH now living in southeastern NC. The only adventure we have on the way is stopping in Wytheville, WV for the quilt store. Now-a-days, we stay in Wytheville overnight to break up the trip. We're older, now, and have more expendable income!!!lol

The name of the store in Columbus is Just Pies. They were featured as one of Oprah's favorites some time ago. When we lived there, we would help them box up pies and help with customers during their busiest seasons, Thanksgiving and Christmas. They've grown to 3 stores now. Our favorites are French Silk (like chocolate mousse) and Peach Crumb. We don't care for the crust, though. It's too salty.

Hey, I agree your family pies do give Pie Town a run for their money!
It looks like fabulous fun, which was seen in you ladies smiles.
I drive 5 hours for pie-coconut cream, but I'm usually going for an apt or shopping not just for the pie.

WOW! What a trip just for pie. I would never go that far. I am known for my Southern Style Pecan pie. My hubby loved it and many others do as well.
