Weekend (Wonder)fuls. . .

I decided on the title of this post after cleaning up my thrifty finds from the last two weekends.

Why is the wonder in parenthesis?  Well, as wonderful as my treasures are, (at least to me); I often wonder why I can’t resist.  This time I justified it by saying that soon the basement will be finished and I’ll be moving a lot of things downstairs. 

A couple weekends ago I attended ‘Fleattitude’.  A junkers paradise!  I really did pretty good and did not buy a lot.

I couldn’t resist these goodies for my farmhouse kitchen.  Isn’t the drippings bowl so cute?

Last weekend in St. George found me toting home more.  I’ve quit buying red glass, (so I thought) because my cabinet is full.  I knew I could squeeze in two small salad plates and a bowl. $5 at a yard sale.  So glad I did.  I found that I had two other plates to match.

I love this platter.  Half price, $7 at a consignment store.

I found the blue trimmed saucers and white ramekins at a thrift. $3 for all.  The saucers are Pyrex.  Who knew they made more than bowls?  The ramekins are Fire King.  Of course I can’t pass up a green handled kitchen tool or a sweet red and white doily for 50 cents.

Four Johnson Bros. Thanksgiving plates for $1 each.  No wonder I can’t resist.

As well as an old brown bottle and a rusty dustpan.

This basket came home with me simply because of the color.  Are you starting to feel that I have absolutely no will power?

I have a weakness for old boxes.  Wish I could say it was my ‘only weakness’! lol!

I have plans for these in my craft room.  Again, the erasers were bought because I love the mustard colored box.

I loved the graphics on these two bottles.   A thrift find for $1.50 for both.  They are not old.  They had a tag from a shop still attached.

This fun tote was only $3.

There you have it my finds from the last two weekends.  Actually, I have a few yard finds, but I’ll save them for another post.

All I can say is that they better hurry up and get my basement finished.  I May have more now than I have room for.  Might have to sale a few things.

Good thing I don’t go to yard sales and thrift stores every weekend.  Although it makes a person ‘wonder’ what treasures they have missed. Hee-hee!  Yes, I have a sickness!!!

Oh my friends, I could hardly wait to get home and share this special find.  I have really missed you and can’t wait to come visit.

Now for the story behind the pictures and lyrics.

At one of the yard sales we went to in St. George I spied this gallon size baggie on a table full of stuff.

The words ‘old blanket’ immediately caught my eye.

Tucked inside and hidden under the doilies is where I found this treasure.

When I took it out of the bag I could hardly believe my eyes.  Like many of you, I swear I heard angels singing.

Now here’s the kicker.  When I took the bag up to pay for it the girl (who I would guess to be in her 30’s) said, “enjoy that blanket, it was mine as a baby and my grandmother made it for me.”

I gasped and said, “Oh my gosh, are you sure you want to sell it?”  A few of my friends gathered round and said the same thing.  She replied, “now ladies”.  indicating that she didn’t want us to talk her back into saving it.  I said, at least tell me your name, so I can think of you every time I look at it.

She replied, “Terry”. 

Sweet Terry, thank you for this treasure.  I will cherish and love it dearly.  After I got home I thought that I should have given her my number in case she ever changed her mind.  But then, if I hadn’t nabbed it someone else would have.

It’s hard for me to understand how someone could part with such a cherished  item.  But then, it’s a good thing that not everyone has emotional attachments.  If they did there would be no treasures for us to find, right?

Here’s the cute doilies inside.  Talk about a lot of bang for your buck.  Can you believe, $3 for all this?

Two of them are runners.  I soaked them all in Biz this morning and they came out beautiful.  A few minor stains on a couple.

Victoria from Sunny in Tucson shared her wonderful Pyrex finds.

Jonell from My Grammas house shared an outdoor space that her hubby built her without her asking.  It has been on her wish list.

BEE Happy!

I have always considered myself to be a happy person.  Life’s too short to spend each day being sad.

If you don’t realize that now, believe me by the time you reach my age, (pushing 60) you will.

Inside I feel just like I did as a teenager hiking to the ‘G’ mountain.  But sometimes I feel my age. Some days I ache as though I have been hiking ‘G’ mountain. lol!

Still I am happy.  I love life and life loves me.   I am very blessed and feel my makers love every single day.

I see the beauty in so many things.  One might say, I have a positive attitude.

I love meeting new people and spending time with family and friends.

One of the greatest compliments I was ever given was told to me by my 17 year old grandson three years ago.

He said, “Grandma, it doesn’t take much to make you happy”.

Yup, a few pretty dishes,  will even do the trick.  Which by the way are my youngest daughters.  I gave them to her for her wedding shower.  They are being stored here while they are in Spain.

You’ll never guess where they came from, the Dollar Store.

My sweet Bee Skep is one of my favorite vacation finds.  I bought it at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.

The burlap bee container was a $7 clearance item at Ross and my cute doily I just bought at Fleattitude for $2.50

If I had one wish for you it would be to “BEE HAPPY”!

Sure there will be days that one might have sadness.  But I pray that if that be the case that you will be able to pick yourself back up and be happy.

Hubby and I love the show, Duck Dynasty.  Uncle Si is always sipping on his sweet tea.  It makes him happy.

No sweet tea, but a Fresh Lime every now and then is so refreshing.

And it’s ever so easy:

Just mix a lemon-lime soda (7-up, Sprite, Fresca, Squirt) with freshly squeezed limes and a bit of cherry juice.

And don’t forget a few slices and cherries to make it ever so pretty.

Especially in my bright green and black thrift find pitcher.

This is sure to make you happy, happy, happy!

Sunday Sweets. . .Raspberry Cream Cheese Bars

Hi everyone, hope you have had a wonderful weekend.

I love fruit and my number one favorite is raspberries.  This morning I was havin myself a cravin for somethin ‘sweet’.

I swear, when I cut my first tooth as a baby that it came in as a sweet tooth. lol!

I make raspberry freezer jam so I decided it was the perfect time to make a recipe that I have had in my ‘to try’ drawer for quite some time.

Now and then some of our local restaurants will share a recipe in our ‘Utah Valley’ magazine.

These Raspberry Cream Cheese Bars were shared by ‘Flour Girls & Dough Boys’ (artisan bakery and café).

Cute name, right?  Sadly enough the business has closed.  I feel bad whenever a local place shuts down.  I must admit that I had only been there once.  Maybe if I had gone more often. 

I baked them before church and let them cool while we were gone.  I was so anxious to try one that I ate it before I fixed dinner.

Life is short, eat dessert first!

Raspberry Cream Cheese bars

Ingredients

1/2 lb. butter, softened

1 c. sugar

2 c. flour

1 c. rolled oats

12 oz. cream cheese

3/4 c. Sweetened Condensed Milk

2/3 c. raspberry jam. (I used 1 cup)

Step 1:  Cream butter and sugar till well creamed

Step 2:  Add flour and oatmeal.  Mix gently to form a crumbly dough.

Step 3:  Put 2/3 of dough in buttered 9 x 13 pan.  Set aside other 1/3 for topping.

Step 4:  Combine cream cheese and Sweetened Condensed Milk in mixer till smooth.

Step 5:  Drop cream cheese mixture on top of crust and spread

Step 6:  Soften jam in microwave until pourable.  Spread over cream cheese mixture.

Step 7:  Crumble dough on top of jam.

Step 8:  Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 min. until crumbs are lightly browned.

After making these I didn’t think I would share the recipe.  They were good, but I thought that the crumbs were just a bit dry.  Well, guess what?  I realized that I had only used 1 cube of butter instead of two.  In my haste I read it as 1/2 C. instead of 1/2 lb.

OOPS!  If at first you don’t succeed; try, try, again!

Oh, and don’t worry.  They won’t go to waste.  Although, they may go to waist!

Coaxing Spring!

Recently we experienced beautiful Spring weather.  But lately Mother Nature has decided that she wasn’t quite ready to hang around.

If I glance out the window it looks so sunny and Spring like, but walk outside and it’s a different story.

The wind has been blowing and there is a chill in the air.  It has even sprinkled a bit of snow from time to time.

I decided that If I wanted Spring to hang around that maybe I needed to do a little coaxing.

I have had the kit to make this banner for a while.  Kraft paper pennants, assorted paper punched flowers, bakers twine, and a few rhinestones…Welcome Spring!

This wooden Spring word had become faded.  It really didn’t say welcome.

A little Mod Podge and glitter. . .

While I was at it I added my stained glass butterfly that my friend, Joyce gave me for my birthday last year.

And a few Spring posies.
