Bloomin Birdbath

Hello my friends, on Saturday I harvested my Pussy Willows and I thought I'd share a fun little project I did.

Last month when I received my Country Gardens magazine there on the cover was a cute birdbath planted for Spring.

I had an old metal birdbath that I had picked up at a thrift shop about a year and a half ago and couldn't wait to play with it.

I found this pot of blooming bulbs at Lowe's for $7.95.  I Intentionally chose one that wasn't fully blooming so that it would last longer.

It contained Daffodils, purple Crocus, a pink Hyacinth, and red tulips.

As you know birdbaths aren't very deep so I took the bulbs out of the pot and separated them and replanted them in the birdbath.  I then mounded dirt around them and added pieces of moss.

I also dug up some real moss from my garden and added it here and there

Of course we have to add our own twist.  Not wanting to copy Country Gardens to a tee I added a couple of clay pots that I had painted green last year.  Some of the color has chipped off here and there and I love the look!

I have a bit of reindeer moss coming out of one pot and for the other I planted some small sedum that I also dug up from the garden.

I clustered some of my Pussy Willows branches in the center.

In just a few days the blooms have started putting on a show.  Just waiting on those red tulips to show off.

It's such a sweet Spring welcome out on the porch!

I have to tell you that when you enter the front door the sweet scent of the Hyacinth is heavenly!

I had so many Pussy Willows that I filled an old milk can that came from my husbands grandparents farm.

I now have it up on the deck and I can see the soft blooms from my kitchen.

I love that the letter B for Beckstead is still on the can!

Tomorrow is the official first day of Spring.

My favorite season!

hugs,
Jann

If I'd done that to a pot of bulbs, they would die and never bloom. But, I can enjoy your green thumb!!! Sally

I love this all Jann.. Such pretty flowers and just in time for spring! I really like the moss that you mixed in the bird bath planter. And Pussy Willows are so fun. We had them where I grew up in Ohio. I miss having them in my back yard. Your photos are lovely, too. Spring Blessings!

I really like it, and I can never understand why someone buy a plant in full bloom. I want as much flowering as I can get for my money. Plus its fun to watch it through the stages. Love the pussy willows and got some from a friend. It looks very springish...now I've got to get going on spring!

This is a really sweet idea Jann. I like the can of pussy willows too. I have two bird baths that I've thought of doing gardens in and I may just do that this year. Happy Spring to you! Pam

I love your new flower arrangement and it looks terrific in your bird bath.
I love pussy willows, but I have not seen any in So CA. I think you need the cold weather for them. They look great in the milk can.
HAPPY SPRING, my friend.

Hello Jann. HAPPY SPRING! What a fun re-do for the birdbath. I really like the color and style as well. It made me think of the Resurrection Garden craft I had seen on another blog. Have you done one? It looks like you could easily accomplish it quickly. Here is the link in case you care to see it. http://wearethatfamily.com/2012/03/diy-mini-resurrection-garden/
Please stop by my blog for a cup of spring tea today!
Blessings to you and yours!!!

Your birdbath came out adorable! I just love pussy willows and have them in my house year round. I only get them occasionally when someone is trimming their tree and I find them randomly. I would love my own tree. Nothing says Spring more to me than pussy willows. Love them in the milk can!

So pretty! I am hoping to help my granddaughter with her own little garden this year, and your post inspired me to have her add a little bird bath among her flowers and veggies. My own bath, in a little cove next to my front door, always has chirpy little visitors! I have plantings too, but not as colorful as yours because that area is deep shade.

I have a birdbath with a nice big crack in it. Perfect for doing this sort of thing. I'll need to wait a few more weeks as we are having snow her today and it's pretty cold out there. I will use some pansies in mine!

What a sweet way to use your birdbath. I too have a pussy willow tree but it is so old and so tall. I think we should prune it way back this year. It has already gone to seed and I usually cut big branches but now I have to get on a ladder to reach them. It is probably 20ft tall. I keep mine in a white stone pitcher in my living room.
