Turkey and Transferware. . .

A couple of years ago I found this soft subtle colored turkey at Home Goods.

I loved it and couldn't resist bringing him home!

I decided to team him up with some transferware in an old rusty metal basket.

The large plates are Johnson Bros. and appropriately named, Frozen Up.  I scored them at a thrift shop
a couple years ago for $1.50 ea.

The frosty scene reminds me of the Thanksgiving song, "Over the River and Through the Woods".  Just so happens that I have a copy of the book, so I placed it on the table next to it.

I found the small plate at a yard sale last year for $5.  I loved it so I didn't even haggle.  :)

Markings on the back.
It's not a Thanksgiving design, but I love mixing things up!

Now here's my question.  I'm sure I could google it, but not near as fun as asking you my friends.  :)

Is this transferware or not?
Resembles transferware, but not marked as such.
Another thrift shop find.

The photo looks out of focus, but the markings are quite blurry on the back.

I found the bowl at a different time, and it's not the same pattern.  I love how both have touches of blue and yellow.

Markings on the bowl.

I love it whether or not it is transferware, but just curious.

Happy November!
hugs,

Although I do not have any Johnsons Brothers plates yet I love them. I agree that turkey is so cute I would have bought him too.

Yes, it is lovely 1940s era Nasco transferware. Nice find!!! And I adore all the other pieces, especially the Johnson Brothers Frozen Up plates! That turkey is great, love it in that off white.

I have a similar turkey that I put out on our Thanksgiving table every year. I like the colouring on yours better than mine which is a solid cream colour.

Jann,
Gorgeous transfer ware, dear friend!!!
Love that turkey in the plate rack, too!!!
We celebrate Thanksgiving. . .all year through.
This year our Thanksgiving Dinner will be hosted On Crooked Creektt.
However, I don't really decorate for Thanksgiving.
Odd, I know!
Thanks for sharing your great finds of the Season!!!
Fondly,
Pat

I would consider them all transferware, except for the turkey, which is gorgeous white glaze on terra cotta I think, which is a very pretty blend with transferware. I should post about my mom's historical blue history plates...eventhough I have them for sale...I learned my history and places in America from them.I did find my turkey platter out in the garage last night...maybe if I get a decent pic of it. Thanks, Sandi

Hi Jann, your transferware is all so wonderful and perfect for Thanksgiving, especially the Frozen Up pattern! I have never seen it before. I don't find much JB here where I live. I have the same book, I love the illustrations.
Have a great weekend,
Gina

I would consider it all transferware -- some is just English and some Japanese. Transferware refers the method that the pattern was applied. Love your finds!! Sally

I was so excited to see your post! I just shared on Share Your Cup a post about the numerous transferware patterns that came to be after Thanksgiving became a national holiday. Some of the patterns are very pricey and others not. The two patterns you have do mix well. I own Johnson Brothers His Majesty, but love your JB pattern. Ridgeway created one of the transferware patterns I shared on SYC. You have a lovely collection. Have a great evening!

I am not sure but I would think they would qualify as transferware (probably if I read the comments before me someone knows for sure)lol Whatever they are they are gorgeous!!!! I really love the turkey, too, He is a great addition. The Frozen plates are probably my favorite. Hope you have a great night- xo Diana

Gorgeous, gorgeous dish ware...and you know how much I love dishes..

I just looked up transferware -Transferware is pottery. It can be earthenware or porcelain, ironstone or bone china. It’s most distinctive feature is a pattern that has been applied by transferring an etching onto the pottery.

Most transferware, an estimated 90%, was made in the Staffordshire county of England, but it was also produced in other areas of Great Britain such as Leeds, Liverpool, Swansea and Scotland.

*****Is it important for Transferware to have the maker’s name on it?
No, many pieces which are made by unknown makers are particularly collectible. Value is determined by a variety of factors including: demand, date, quality of the printing, and rarity.

I love all of the dishes, whether there transfer ware or not too, Jann. You have beautiful collections. Your new turkey blends well with them all.

Great finds and all lovely, Jann. Do you think the transferware has hand painted details for that touch of blue and yellow?
I'm a happy girl tonight. Found my McK-C Courtly Check dishes in a thrift store today. Big score! '-)

I love transferware, and yours is beautiful, Jann. All of it. How interesting that the bowl you found looks like it belongs with the other pieces. The colors look identical. Love your turkey, too. xo

I think they are NOT transferware as they seem handpainted. You might have to look up each companies information to find to though. Either way, they are lovely.

i love your transferware collection. i've started a smallish brown transferware collection myself. i even love when the plates have small chips or immperfections. they have a story to tell & the $$ goes down. i was lucky to inherit a johnson bros. plate set w/ the huge turkey platter from my parents. it's called barnyard king & i use it every time we host thanksgiving. i love your turkey too. it all looks great together! xo- maryjo

I love your Over the River dishes and the turkey! That song was one of my favorites as a small child. They sang it in school in Michigan. When I moved to Kansas, I never heard it again for years. I enjoy it now again. Blessings!
