How Sweet the Sound!

I love the sound of running water in the garden. Except for maybe when I need to go to the bathroom. Seriously, I am so bad at holding it all day when I am gardening.  We had a stream with a small pond at our previous home that hubby and I built.  There was nothing I enjoyed more than relaxing out on the deck and listening to that sound of water rolling gently between the rocks.

Every Spring cleaning out the pond was a bit of a chore.  When we moved into our new home I couldn’t bear the thought of losing that sound.

To make it easier on ourselves, (yes, we’re not getting any younger) we decided that we would go with a pondless waterfall.  Springtime comes and hubby has it up and running in no time at all.

It’s not large, only about 8 ft. long, but oh baby, it does the trick.  No matter where you are in the garden you can here the gentle sound of rushing water.

There’s the water that makes that wonderful sound.  Are you feeling the cool blue?

IMG_6590

A sound that makes even Mr. frog jump for joy.

IMG_6655

I think that the waters edge Siberian Iris enjoy the sound too.  Don’t they look like happy flowers?

IMG_6657

Fun ceramic mushrooms are growing nearby.

IMG_6581

And you never know what creatures you might discover.

This dragonfly given to me by my sister, Julie is very talented.  It changes color at night.

IMG_6594

The orange and white poppies by the waterfall are putting on quite a show.

Soon these Iris will be bursting with white blooms.

I enjoy the feature as much at night as I do in the day.  It has three spotlights that light up the water.

I’m sure by now that you’ve noticed that a few of my pictures have a blue hint to them.  I had the camera on the wrong setting. Go figure, me do something wrong? Hee-hee!  I decided to leave them as they were.  Gave kind of a cool blue feeling.

My waterfall may not be large, but it gives me the feel as though I am in the canyon.  One other nice thing, my neighbor has told me numerous times how much she enjoys listening to the sound from her yard.

So nice to have happy neighbors!

Hugs,

Jann

Hi Jann, I love your waterfall. In my next garden I would also go pond less and have a bubbler or waterfall. Jen

Hi Jann! This is actually one of my dreams. To have my own water fountain or mini waterfalls at home. It also relaxes me to hear the sound of the moving water. In case I would have the opportunity to see your home, I would surely have my photo taken there LOL You are blessed to have such beautiful piece at home

Oh, your waterfall is beautiful. I so want one in our yard. This year I dragged hubby to all the pond and waterfall displays at the Home & Garden show. I think he's getting the hint - lol. We are starting to clean an area where we think we may put one so hopefully soon!

That's a lovely waterfall! I'd love a spot like that in my yard, but neither hubby or I are good at that kind of thing.

Have a great week.

I agree, nothing more calming than the sound of a water fall.
Yours is lovely the way it is set up with all the flowers and ornaments!

I love the blue tint. Perhaps you could do it again!? The flowers are lovely too. We have a pond water feature in our back garden and the water falls onto rocks as the pond is too much trouble to clear so we filled it with rocks! Lovely blog. Thanks. Joan

Jann, I've always dreamed of having a stream or waterfall in my yard, even if it was manmade! I am so insanely jealous of this. I hope you really get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Your garden is so alluring between the views and I imagine the sounds. Thanks for coming by again and keeping up with Quirky Vistas. You are much appreciated for your kind words.

Jann, Your backyard sounds like such a retreat! The pondless waterfall is a great idea. So it just runs on a circulating pump? I love the white poppies! So pretty!

Beautiful waterfall. I love how it looks. I think pondless is the way to go. We have one off our Family room. The pond in the front of our house is not pondless, therefore it needs cleaning. My hubby cleaned it out yesterday

What a beautiful backyard. We have a pond. I hear ya about the cleaning out of it. We are going on a pond a rama in Missouri, visiting several koi water gardens.
Have a great week!

Hi Jann!

Your waterfall is wonderful! I like the fact that it doesn't have a basin to have to deal with. Also dogs won't be tempted to go swimming!

I just posted about all the little critters we had in and around the pond we had in Texas. I sure hope the new owners have taken care of it...

Your backyard looks lovely, I can see that you like to garden. I don't get to garden much here in this awful heat :(

How wonderful is that waterfall? I also really like the sound of running water or the ocean. (Do you think that's considered running water, too?) I gave away my little fountain because I was worried I might electrocute myself. Long story. Now I'm looking for a sound I can just download to my computer!

Jann - your waterfall is just beautiful - as is your yard! I have to agree with you about the need to hear that falling water. I had three water gardens at our lake house before we moved here to our vintage farmhouse. The first thing I did was to build another water garden. Three days later, I had 18 frogs living in it! :)

Hi Jann! Your waterfall pond and flowers are gorgeous! I could sit there for hours (and stick my toes in the water!) I've always wanted a cascading pond like this. I have a little fountain in a barrel which makes nice noise but isn't nearly as impactful as a larger one would be. Well, I'll just have to put it on my garden to do list! Thanks for sharing! Hugs, Leena

Hi Jann, nice to meet you. Your water fall is gorgeous!! What a great idea to just have a watefall. I have a pond and it can be a chore at times, but I do love seeing the fish. I love the way the water falls drowns out the rest of the neighborhood ;)
Your gardens are just lovely ♥
Thank so much for stopping by.

It's gorgeous! Last fall I got a divorce in Texas and moved to Oklahoma. I left behind my new pondless waterfall. I want another so bad! It had a 32 inch spillway and mad marvelous noise.

Oh I love your pondless waterfall! I know what you mean about maintenance on the ponds. We had one but removed it due to themaintenance issues. Now I have a fountain instead! I love your design and how it's laid into the property! Great job! Your iris look so happy! They are so thick! I just split mine up last year and they look much better this year. I think I have the exact same cement turtle in my garden too! I did the same thing with my camera the other day. I was playing with the manual mode but left the white balance on tungsten instead of for shade. I had an odd blue tint to mine too! Your home looks beautiful and I like your front beds that I see in your other pictures!

I really like your waterfall area. We chose to do a prefab pond and used a whiskey barrel with plastic waterfall that goes inside the barrel. We have goldfish and one cat fish in our pond. This yr. we tore out most of the garden around it and planted more of an engish garden behind the watergarden. On each side of the pond with have the cream and green leaf hostas. And then behind I put in a lilac that has the blue-lavender color for a tree in the center of the flower bed. Then I have coral bells, lillies, Japanese anomome (sp.) iries, rocks and rockery plants. Then we are going to take the small rocks and make a dry stream bed to the back of the whiskey barrel so my husband can feed the fish. It has been years of enjoyment. With all the clearing of woods around our area it also adds a noise barrier. I have several faux pots with water fountains made out of copper pipes and small pumps inside. I have one by my front entry to our home and one on our back patio. I really enjoy the sound and looks of water gardens. We have hummingbirds year round and so many different birds. Thanks for the pictures and ideas for gardens.
