What a busy week I have had! Last night I had a garden party at my home. I was asked to host the monthly night meeting for the woman in our church. I considered it a compliment when a few of them asked if they could instagram a photo of my yard.

Hubby and I worked all week on a last minute project that we, (I) wanted to have finished before.

The grass had sunk below the sidewalk leading down into our basement. You could see underneath and they had not backfilled it at all.

We removed the grass and hubby filled the void space underneath the sidewalk and relocated the sprinkler head.

This is what it looks like now.

So nice to have this little project behind us!

Last week was filled with so much inspiration! I was in full garden mode so I couldn’t help but feature some lovely gardens. Because of that there will be more features than usual.

Look at this fabulous bench created for Pennys Vintage Home by her husband out of old bed pieces.

Karen from Somewhat Quiky Design shared the redo of an old hoosier cabinet out on her porch.

C D's Country Living redid a cabinet in her dining room. You must go see what it looked like before!

Another fabulous makeover was this kitchen by Patti from Old Things New. Again, you must see the before photos.

Kiki Nakita took us on a wonderful tour of the quaint town in England where she grew up.

Have you ever taken the time to think about how Betsy Ross must have felt while having the honor of making Americas first flag?

This post is in honor of that courageous woman who lost two husbands during the war.

I gathered some of the vintage sewing items that I picked up a couple weeks ago at a yard sale and showcased them under a small cloche. I placed a plump little Uncle Sam made from red and white ticking next to it.

In June 1776, brave Betsy was a widow struggling to run her own upholstery business. Upholsterers in colonial America not only worked on furniture but did all manner of sewing work, which for some included making flags. According to Betsy, General Washington showed her a rough design of the flag that included a six-pointed star. Betsy, a standout with the scissors, demonstrated how to cut a five-pointed star in a single snip. Impressed, the committee entrusted Betsy with making our first flag

Betsy came from a Quaker family and was expelled from the Family Meeting when she married John Ross who was from another religion. She was already acquainted with both George and Martha because they sat in the pew directly across from her and John each Sunday.

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress, seeking to promote national pride and unity, adopted the national flag. "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."

I have collected 6 patriotic buttons. The yellow ribbon is one that was given to me when my husband was activated for Desert Storm.

Thanks to talented Betsy we have the five pointed star.

The story of Betsy was not told until 1873 by her grandson. There are those who question as to whether or not she actually made the first flag.

I am a believer and I can’t help but think that a little love went into each and every stitch!

Where the Green Fern Grows. . .

There’s a place on the East side of our home where the green ferns grow. Now these aren’t just any ordinary ferns. . .these ferns hold a special place in my heart.

These ferns were starts from my sweet Mother. She grew them at the end of her deck on the North side of her home. I started with just a few and they continue to reproduce.

I have always loved ferns. There is nothing quite like them growing wild in the canyon. About 5 years ago I started picking up fern décor. My first purchase was this simplistic platter with the fern gracing the left hand side.

A couple years ago I found the paper pressed framed fern in a thrift shop. It had a gold frame and green matting. An easy fix with white paint and burlap.

The bottles came next. They usually reside in our half bath off the kitchen.

A recent trip to Joanne’s brought me three new items. All at 50% off.

I found this round box. . .

and the paper weight. I had picked up the designed ball on clearance somewhere and this morning (while cleaning out a drawer) I found this postcard of ‘fern canyon’ in OR sent to us in ‘2009’ by our daughter, Kylee

They are housed in a flower terrarium from T.J. Maxx.

Now back to Joanne’s and my 3rd find. Well, it was actually spied by my sister, Jeanne. Here she came up the isle toting it and said, “thought you might want this”. Why on earth would she think that? lol!

I love this pitcher and it made the perfect vase for some of my gorgeous ferns. Thanks sis!

Although a lot of my home is decorated Americana for the summer, I had to showcase my fern collection.

I put it all together in the living room and this is what I got.

I couldn’t decide which angle was the best. Hee-hee!

Thinking the sides are a little too even. Guess I’ll be doing a little mixing up. The decorating never ends here!

*NOTE: I moved the round box to the right side and that did the trick. Easy peasy!

Summer Time Fun Porch. . .

Although the official first day of Summer isn’t until the 21st, once June has arrived and the temps are reaching close to 90 my thoughts turn to Summer.

Usually I decorate my front porch in an Americana theme. This year I decided to give it a twist.
